Dawn breaks the camp...in the beating heart of Wilderness
This was the final trip of 2k8 and one that had been on my list for over a year, I saved it for the last b/c I knew the area was so dramatic and I wanted to savor the end of season. I dropped in from Roslyn Wa on the Pete Lake trail, which doubles as a pack trail. I dont like hiking horse trails but it is what it is. Pete lake was a dumb lake, 4 miles in and it couldve been a city park for all I could tell, there were people everywhere, etc etc. I stopped here to pump water/take a swim and thats when I realized I forgot my camera; imagine my dismay, I almost quit the trip right there. I didnt find the camera until I was setting camp later that night, and I began an excited frenzy of photos. The hike itself was long, arduous and once I almost turned back but tarried on despite. I arrived, set up camp after explorations of the area and set about looking for a tree to hang the bear bag when I found a better site and moved camp to that spot. The moonrise was spectacular, Ive never seen anything like it, the entire experience was quintessential, this is a textbook location but it was for me tough to get there. Next Season after the conditioning trips, this will be my first overnight. A party came in late in the night, hidden from view and were out before dawn the following morning and an aloof German whom I passed earlier that day on the way in set up camp across the lake from me, where i watched from behind field glasses periodically throughout the evening, lest he gun me down like a dirty drygulcher.
Another stunning set of photos, find the Spectacle Lake series here.

/ 11/10/2009i’m jealous. I’m living in korea and you should see what they call hiking here. One million people walking up groomed trails and stairs bolted into the sides of mountains. Every one of them are wearing about six hundred dollars worth of gear that they don’t need. Blech.
