I dont know whats going on with me musically but I have been lost in all the wrong genres lately, if there is such a thing as a wrong genre. I doubt so, but after 20 years defined by punk and ska, outlaw country sprinkled intermittently with hip hop and ambient…..Im sometimes taken aback by my own tastes. The beauty of our time lies in choice, selection and consumption. Anything you want, we could have gotten for you 5 minutes ago had you just dropped the word. I was talking to a friend yesterday about hipsters being the new hippie and I admitted I liked alot of their music. I suppose were I a filth-encrusted hippie in the 60′s/70′s I would have been dropping acid and getting STD’S with the best of em, all to a soundtrack of the Who, Dylan and the Moody Blues, all of whom I consider today to be superlative artists. The difference between then and now is palpable however: I have no social disease because I know better, as I pay attention to community outreach memos regarding disease rates. I also dont have a fucked up mustachioed face, nor do I sport a rat tail, ride a fixie (fixed gear bike) and most importantly I dont wear skin tight jeans and ironic tee shirts. Hate City is a stupid bunch of Hipsters here in Seattle who like mixing it up on Capitol Hill’s music scene. They are Hipsters, Hipsters who Hate. EVERYTHING. Do you want jumped in to Hate City? All you have to do is hate everything but hipsters, and hang out at the Comet any night after midnight for the fully patched leathers scurrying around the dumpsters, smoking handrolls and drinking tallboys. I dont know where hate city came from, maybe its the F.S.U. dregs from 5 years back…thats my best guess.
Why do I keep capitalizing hipster? That stops now. No respect.
This post was originally about music, then it decomposed into this…..hispter junk…
Maybe this is a musical hot flash, some menopausal rage going on inside my brain that even I have yet to confirm….except I like it. At the end of the day I just love sounds and music, particuarly anything that flows, whether its reggae, punk, country or glitz-rock. If it has rhythm fast or slow, I will love it. I dont like noise, mathrock, idm, and industrial apocalyptic, as its defined classically. Its all just mindless brain-bomb noise. Here is my blipfeed which carrys alot of great new stuff; I like it, alot. I dont play with it, enough. Ive been consuming some of this stuff for a few years, like Gus Gus and Felix but over the the course of 2009 this stuff has been whats mainly in my ipods, on my desk. I was stoked to hear alot of it on this years snowboard film fest blitz, I dont know how or why Im “par for the course” but somehow I am. I wish I wasnt, there just isnt much I feel like doing about it right now.
On the right column you will see my rss feeds for LastFm, dedicated solely to Neo-Folk and underneath that my feed for Blip, which I just linked above. Its all real time, as I consume. Follow me on either and lets trade Sounds with each other. I was a big Imeem user until 2 weeks ago when Myspace ate Imeem. I signed up for Myspace today and within 5 minutes cancelled my account. Seriously. Myspace reminds me to this day of that sinking feeling you get when you are in the drive through line at Taco Bell but you havent paid yet, and theres still cars in front of you. You remind yourself there is still time to get out….but you dont.
Myspace and Taco Bell are the same things: socially perverse, wildly immoral and inherently evil.
Here is some Bravery:
File this under post-punk.
