Its Sunday night, almost 10pm….Im wiped out on another killer weekend in the mountains. Lots of good snow and fast turns, lots of wood burnt deep into the night and lots of drinks and stories alongside it. I pulled anchor off the mountain today around noon and dropped off the moho, picked up the truck, got my buddy Jeff and then went back over the Pass to get the chairlift. On the way there the weather turned to hell on us and we drove up the pass in a full blown blizzard, its amazing how quickly the weather can turn around. Its been a really warm and low snow season so far, but today reminded us of how quickly the tides can change, with no notice; lets see what is left, I think Winter has a stab or two at us yet.
Almost to the top of the Pass I picked up 5 snowboarders who had the balls to shred off the mountain and look for the prime. It was a big decision on their part since there is no way to know what your getting into, especially in a season as strange as this but I was really stoked to see them coming down the sides and into the ditch along the highway. I waited there for a few minutes as they all got down and loaded into my pickup; they were jacked as hell not just for getting a ride without so much as stretching a thumb, but for the fact that they WENT OUT AND GOT AFTER IT: the session paid off and they said they found some gnar but overall it was a great ride and they might do it again that day. I loved it, they were really stoked to have done something so cool and it reminded me of what keeps the fires stoked in me, and why I do it, and why I kept coming back to it year after year. I gave them all my card for this and I hope they come see this; I really admired what they were out doing…….chasing down what makes them happy and doing it with enough confidence to know they will have fun either way. Good job guys, see you out there again I hope.
We went and loaded up my chairlift, far down the mountain and on the way up threw the truck in 4wd and had no troubles, even though the road was getting really bad. I hadnt used 4wd in the snow yet like that and was pleased it handled so well. Halfway up the mountian we counted another half dozen snowboarders leaving the trees above the highway and getting ready to walk/thumb back up to the lifts and again it made me happy. Today was the most Winter Ive seen all year, in terms of riders getting out and chasing down the sessions in deep trees, far out of bounds. Good job to all of them.
Now Im headed for the couch and NatGeo.
check out my tight new chair!
