ScienceLab! Bees:

The results showed that bees clearly prefer nectar containing nicotine and caffeine over the “clean” nectar. The preferred nicotine concentration was 1 milligram per liter, similar to that found in nature. Given a choice of higher levels of nicotine versus “clean” nectar, the bees preferred the latter.

Smoke ‘em if you got em.

A group of bees were shown pictures of human faces and pictures of random geometric designs, and rewarded with sugar when they visited the pictures of faces. After doing this for a while, the bees were shown a different set of images that resembled faces; they flew toward these face-like pictures though they’d never seen them before.

  1. I’m reading some Irish cook books right now, and one of them spoke to how common it is for families to have bee hives. They have this great tradition, if a member of the family dies, someone has to go down and “tell the bees” so they don’t swarm or die in their hives.
