The results showed that bees clearly prefer nectar containing nicotine and caffeine over the “clean” nectar. The preferred nicotine concentration was 1 milligram per liter, similar to that found in nature. Given a choice of higher levels of nicotine versus “clean” nectar, the bees preferred the latter.
A group of bees were shown pictures of human faces and pictures of random geometric designs, and rewarded with sugar when they visited the pictures of faces. After doing this for a while, the bees were shown a different set of images that resembled faces; they flew toward these face-like pictures though they’d never seen them before.

/ 02/17/2010I’m reading some Irish cook books right now, and one of them spoke to how common it is for families to have bee hives. They have this great tradition, if a member of the family dies, someone has to go down and “tell the bees” so they don’t swarm or die in their hives.
