Dirtbag Ball

The Rendezvous landed on the greatest weekend of all time for ski-bums in the PACNW: the Dirtbag Ball at Crystal Mountain. If you dont know what it is, it doesnt matter….its easy to explain: Ski Patrol sells tickets to a huge rager in a private lodge and tells everyone to dress up and go nuts, which we did; sometime in the middle of the party they crown a King and Queen as Dirtballs for the year. Dirtball being defined as the most hardcore ski bum on the hill for that particular year. Upon crowning they are awarded some gear, a hat and bragging rights for the season. Its one hell of a party, one of the best ones Ive seen in fact, we had a damn fine time consorting with the locals that night. Interesting to note: after last call I met the new Queen of the Mtn and she was telling me all sorts of stories, the most interesting one being her other award as Queen: free booze for the year. Im impressed of course. Covetous even.
I got shanghai’d by two dark eyed, raven haired gypsy sisters that night, I shoulda seen those two a mile away and maybe I did, and maybe that was the problem but thats what I get. They had me pegged the day before I think……..
The Dirtbag Ball is big time, the real deal and by god we are going back next year for more. The only rule is you have to dress up, I was lucky I had the tree suit in my closet.

I tell you what, that place BLEW UP when the dj dropped this jam. Every time I hear this I will think of that night now.

The bottom fell out of the Northwest regional forecast for the next couple of days, Im convinced that NOAA is lying off their scurvy asses even now when they say tomorrows high temp @ 5k feet will be 35 with a low of 33. Sounds like all hell has broken loose in this new slushed out world. There is nowhere to go but as of FRIDAY I secured a 3 week holiday wherein I jubilantly planned on chasing snow in 4 different states: Montana, Idaho, Washington and Alaska. What can anyone do with a warm weather vacation?! It makes no sense to me….The forecast is the same for any mountain I look at: warm and wet. I will keep everyone posted on where I am at over the course of the next few weeks, and what I am doing there…….

Follow my Twit-Grinder for boozy, real time alerts, massively inappropriate commentary on whatever Im looking at, twit pics in case words fail me as Im looking at something and Bukowski style consumptions and consequences. I tweet, alot. None of it is civil, be warned.

This is my earliest vacation to date, normally I leave @ the end of the first week of the New year to lock in those bitter cold temps….and big powder days. I hope this year I havent blown a premature load.

Wish me luck…..Ive got two trucks full of gas, and a motorhome stuffed with supply (read: bottles and bottles) enough for a multiweek trek. I really dont know when Im going to end up where Im going, I just know Ive got 4 states to pillage in 3 weeks.

A Call to Arms

Things are getting serious for the shred. Monday we dropped in to Stevens Pass to get the gear checked out and tweak/adjust. Im old school about gear, I dont give two shakes what a binding diagnostic is, or what my stance means numerically…which means for brand new gear, its takes 2 or 3 runs to get the perfect angle, flex and reaction to and from my gear. The Custom X this year is a beast, absolutely lightning fast, mega responsive and like its predecessors, unstoppable. Im excited to drop big turns in the backcountry and I think its the ultimate setup for the AK trip. I have the CO2 EST bindings mounted this year and initially I wasnt impressed…initially being defined as pre-ride. Turns out I made the perfect board/binding pairing again, as these two compliment each others’ almost sinister response time. The binding mount plate is on the outside frame of the binding itself this year, something that bothered me until I rode it. Its a snap to adjust and it allows you to feel the board under your feet all the more, for a deck as monstrous as this one, that means alot. This board turns on less than a dime, it feels you before you do almost. My second run of the season I paced two skiers for half a mile, playing with my edges, and watching them try to smoke me out just off of Skyline. These guys were hauling ass and doubly so as I would check an edge to produce that grim noise that only a big edge can make on snow in relatively high speeds; the interesting thing about this story is this though: I decided to smoke these guys, there was alot of gas left in the board and I knew these two wouldnt let me pass them if they could help it so what better way to test the dynamic of all the new gear? It seemed like before I even floored it and had the board flat-lined downhill I was already there and these two guys were not even halfway down yet. I was totally taken aback by not just the evil speed, but how smooth it handled a chewed up groom, and just destroyed everything in its path. A trail of smoldering rubble in its black wake, taking whatever it wanted on its way down. I get to ride alot of good decks with all the trimmings; this is easily one of the best ones yet! This coming from the guy who has a 2k8 Vapor on his wall as art. Get this board, dominate the mountain.
So heres’ the plan: Thursday night up at the Lower Lot I am having a Thanksgiving Bonfire/Boozeup as the first Mayoral Session of the 2k10 Season. Once anchor is dropped, Im not moving til Sunday morning. I have a super secret mega-guest coming up to join the fray, he will be in his own rig and this is his first trip like this to date. Come up and say hi, bring a log for the fire and some ‘shine for our mugs. No night-ski til Dec. 11, which means fires’ by 5 nightly.

Pirates are hospitable

We went through a spate of piracy over the Summer that was every bit exciting as it was dangerous. Young Somali thunderheads getting their heads blown off in simultaneous sniper attacks, rumours of pirate orgy’s at Puntland strongholds, where young Nubian concubines entertained their khat-fueled hero’s in any way imaginable. Yes piracy certainly sounded fun then, and even moreso now. I was driving past the Port of Seattle yesterday and looking at all the ocean cargo ships and I couldn’t help but wonder if the pirate scourge had ever set foot on whichever vessel caught my eye and then realized we haven’t heard a peep from Puntland in some time. Piracy still thrives it turns out, nobody cares anymore though…..except Spain, who recently placed personnel on all Indian Sea fishing vessels, personnel with military grade weaponry.
I’d be soaking up as much rum and wench I could, were I in Puntland right now…..might be my last.

For the vics, piracy is more of a holiday than expected, here’s the following, grifted from HuffPost who nicked it from BBC who nicked it from….oh balls!you get the drift.
